WHAT IS A POLYP?
The appearance ranges from a few millimeters to several centimeters with and without a small leg. Nasal polyps are mainly of sinus origin.
What causes a polyp to form?
The exact mechanism of polyp formation is unknown. Various theories have been put forward on this score. There are many factors among them, such as allergic reactions caused by bacteria and reactions caused by fungi. As a result, the reaction in the tissues of the nose leads to swelling, growth and spread in the nose, which causes complaints such as nasal congestion, impaired sense of smell, headaches and runny nose.
What types of polyps exist?
Polyps are different. The polyps here are nasal polyps of the respiratory system. The most common is the type that occupies both the nasal cavity and the sinuses.
In addition, antrochoanal polyps are more common in childhood.
Connection of polyps with sinusitis
Sinusitis and nasal polyps are often confused. Sinusitis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which occurs as a result of blockage of the paranasal sinuses. This can happen for various reasons. One of these reasons are polyps. Nasal polyps can cause inflammation in the sinuses by blocking the sinus drainage channels. This process should be explained by imaging methods (tomography, endoscopic examination). Based on this, treatment is chosen.
What are the methods of treating polyps?
There are two methods of treatment:
1. Medical treatment. During drug treatment, antibiotics, sprays and drops, antihistamines and vasoconstrictors can be used. The goal is to correct the secondary infection, reduce the size of the polyp and improve the patient’s quality of life by facilitating nasal breathing.
2. Surgical treatment. The best and absolute results can be obtained after surgical treatment. To do this, the polyps are surgically removed after shrinkage with medication, and the use of cortisone reduces the risk of recurrence of polyps. However, despite all this, polyps can still grow. This should be fully explained to the patient in advance.
How is the surgical method performed?
-Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
The main purpose of polyp surgery is to remove polyps and open the nasal passage, clear the sinuses of polyps, open the closed sinuses from the outside, clear them of infections and provide ventilation. These operations are now performed using light and imaging instruments called endoscopy, so there is no need for external incisions.
